Service, Sacrifice and Riptides Rescues

From Coast Guard hero to IES leader, Craig Green’s dedication to service extends beyond the members of IES, reaching even those swept away by riptides at sea!

Each year on November 11th, our nation pauses to honor and celebrate the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The significance of Veterans Day extends beyond the parades and the ceremonies; it serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have dedicated their lives to protect our freedom and security.

At IES Electrical, the veterans among us each bring unique experiences, perspectives, and skills shaped by their service, that strengthen IES culture and operations. Vice President and General Manager of IES Portland, Craig Green, began his career in the U.S. Coast Guard as a former Petty Officer and rescue swimmer, where he expanded on qualities like dedication and bravery before joining IES in 1995. Reflecting on his experience serving as rescue swimmer, Craig shared that one of his more dramatic rescues was even captured on film.

After being dropped from a helicopter off the coast of Oregon, Craig secured a 15-year-old boy swept away by a riptide. Upon lifting the boy into the aircraft, the rescue crew, concerned that he might be hypothermic, flew the boy directly to the hospital, planning to return for Craig once the boy was secure. Though Craig never met the young man that day, the story doesn’t end there.

Years later, in an unexpected twist, the Maury Povich Show aired a segment that reunited survivors of life-threatening situations with their rescuers. It was during this show that Craig, for the first time, met Ryan Caskey – the young man he had saved from the sea years prior.

Though Craigs commitment to people would likely prompt him to swim another riptide if necessary, stories like his highlight the selfless service and sacrifice of all veterans nationwide. Thank you for your service, Craig, and for powering a safer world!
