Meet the Falkner’s

IES Portland Second Generation Electricians

Rick Falkner, Senior Foreman at IES, built more than just a career at IES—he’s built a family legacy. Explore how IES Portland’s second-generation electricians, alongside their father, bring a unique blend of ambition where family and work synergize.

Like father, like sons. Rick Falkner, Senior Foreman at IES Portland, established a legacy of great athleticism, drive, and trade via his two sons, Cameron Falkner, IES Foreman, and Brett Falkner, IES Apprentice. Early on in their childhood, Cameron and Brett Falkner both took an interest in sports and became promising young athletes before going on to establish themselves in the electrical trade at IES.

As a standout athlete in high school— excelling in baseball, wrestling, soccer, and cross country— Cameron Falkner developed a strong foundation in discipline and leadership qualities that would later help frame his career at IES. In 2012, Cameron’s path pivoted from traditional schooling when his father called with a promising opportunity: “Hey, we’re hiring a shop driver position,’” Cameron recalls. Just months into the role, he began his apprenticeship. “I worked at IES for three years of my apprenticeship, before my wife and I moved,” said Cameron, “we then realized once we had a baby, that being close to family was what we needed.” Upon his return, the Falkner legacy at IES continued, with Rick even serving as his son’s foreman on two separate projects. “We worked pretty well together,” said Cameron, “It’s nice having family work here, but it’s more than that, IES has always treated me well.” Today Cameron oversees field operations, serving as his little brother’s foreman and continuing the Falkner legacy.

Brett, who was particularly skilled at baseball and even made it to the Little League World Series, began his IES career after earning his bachelor’s degree in marketing. Upon experiencing the monotonous nature of office work, he quickly shifted his gaze towards opportunities in trade. Taking after both his older brother and father, Brett took initiative. “I was living with my parents at the time, came home one day, and just asked if IES needed an apprentice,” said Brett, “I didn’t want to go back to an office job.” After being hired on as a material handler, Brett worked in the shop until he was later accepted into the Salem Apprenticeship Program. Now in his third year of apprenticeship, Brett hasn’t yet worked on his dad’s jobsite but enjoys working with his older brother.

“If I didn’t enjoy working for IES and being part of the family that we have here in Portland, I wouldn’t have brought my kids here,” said Rick Falkner, emphasizing the family dynamic that keeps him energized on the job. From boys to men, the Falkner family embodies generational continuity, loyalty and love – for sports, the trade and for each other.

IES extends a special thank you to Rick Falkner for entrusting us with those you love the most – at our core, we value people!
